11/01/2023 Banned and restricted announcement
Announcement Date:11/01/2023
- Maelstrom Wanderer is Unbanned.
- Cards in “Colossal List” are Banned in Powerlevel:Friendly.
Deck Power Level Indicators in Huge Leaders
As each player prepares his or her own deck for a game, one must consider the differences in deck power levels within the same game. When decks in the same game are of varying strengths, there is a risk that the strongest deck will win the game very early in the turn, thus spoiling the playing experience for the other players. This has been a problem in the Commander, and it is the same in Huge Leaders.
As of today, we have decided to define two power levels in Huge Leaders. This is due to the difficulty of figuring out where your deck stands in this format where information is so limited, the difference in assets between players who have been playing for less than a year, and the level of understanding of the Huge Leaders format.
The first power level is “Colossal” , which applies to cards that are not on the banned list. The second is “Friendly” , which bans cards on the “Colossal List” in addition to the original Huge Leaders bans.
Powerlevel:Colossal is much the same as previous Huge Leaders. This power level is designed for competitive play, where very powerful cards are played, sometimes with a stalemate field and void. In previous Huge Leaders ban restriction notices, we have taken a stance of not going so far as to specifically ban threats that would be easy to deal with if played by people with a high level of understanding of the format.
We believe that the introduction of power levels will allow people to continue to enjoy Huge Leaders as they have in the past by leaving them as they are.
On the other hand, we recognize that Huge Leaders is also a multi-player casual format, and there are many players who enjoyed it in that regard. In that respect, there was no doubt that there were cards out in the open that were detrimental to the playing experience. With the introduction of Powerlevel:Friendly and the new “Colossal List” of banned cards, we hope to open up more room for casual play.
Maelstrom Wanderer
This card was banned on 02/16/2021. In the past, the strong identity that cascade and the granting of haste had excluded other leaders with the same color indicator.
However, with the introduction of the power level, we were able to establish a boundary with casual play, so we decided it was acceptable to unban him.
11/01/2023 Colossal List
While we will not individually explain the reasons for the cards to be included in the Colossal List, we hope that removing these cards from the Powerlevel:Friendly will allow more room for casual enjoyment of the format.
